A Brief History of Hope in the City

22860000 22860000 (`@````````` 266 263 5 110185200 110185200 Hope in the City (HITC) was founded in 1998 on the vision and hard work of Kevin McCloskey in partnership with the kind folks at College Center Covenant Church From the get go, it has been focused on providing vital community resource support services and giving access  for societal advancement to the densely populated and impoverished neighborhood of City Heights, San Diego.  In 2005, Joon S. Han was brought in as Interim Executive Director to lead the organization in a new and direction. Since then, HITC has been on a trajectory to be a more mature infrastructure organization for other fledgling non-profits in addition to the growth of its own communitry redevelopment programs.

q Over 70,000 people living within 40 square miles (seven times the CA average)

q 34 different dialects/ethnic groups

q Tens of thousands of refugees from Africa and South East Asia

q 70% of the community being the working poor from Latin American

q 5th and 6th generation welfare families

q A median family income of less than $19,000 a year

q Over 40% of the populations living below the federal poverty line

q The 2nd largest school district in CA with over $7 Billion in needed repairs
